Firefox 3 slowness fixed

Nice! Firefox is usable again. When I installed Fedora 10 at work, the browser worked fine. When I did it at home, the Fox turned into a dog. Flipping between tabs in particular was VERY slow. I tried switching the Radeon video driver back to XAA acceleration, but that didn't help.

Finally found the answer at My-guides.net in their Fedora 10 installation guide. Firefox 3 has IPV6 - which nobody I know uses - enabled by default. So, it was trying to resolve an IPV6 address before failing over to IPV4.

Enter about:config in the url bar and then toggle network.dns.disableIPv6 to true. It works very nicely.

Thankfully, while Mozilla uses a Windowsish registry to hold settings, they don't store the data in a binary database. So, you could also stop Firefox and edit your prefs.js to make the same change.

Do a simple search in Sharepoint, and you get an "unknown error". D'oh! The troubleshooting link, of course, was useless (raise your hand if you didn't see that one coming!) "Windows SharePoint Services" is obviously an oxymoron. I wonder if it's another case of Microsoft tyring to break third-party browsers?

Typical Microsoft!

Their idea of innovation is finding new ways to shut users out. At work we're stuck using Sharepoint. :( In case you don't know, Sharepoint is their awful attempt at a CMS. Here's an example of why it sucks:

See there's a spreadsheet embedded in the "database", but if you want to download a copy you have to use a Microsoft OS and a Microsoft browser (Ieeeeeee!). Seems Microsoft is genetically incapable of writing real web apps. Big surprise.

Cthulhu's garden art

This is just a place holder for the moment. Real deep thoughts coming soon. Heh. In the mean time, here's a purdy picture:

Actually, this is a photo people don't seem to like. Not a single fav on DeviantArt. :( So sad. I, however, like the stupid thing. It's dark, ominous, and looks like something Lovecraft would have shot if he were into photography. Perhaps it's an angel being twisted into some swamp creature? Perhaps it's the gate outside a mansion belonging to followers of the Old Ones? Cthulhu's garden art?

What's not to love?
